First: where is the car?
Everything below forks here, and the fork matters more than anything about the tire.
Stopped in a live traffic lane, or on a shoulder too narrow to stand clear of → this is a road hazard, not a tire problem. Call 911. Get everyone out of the car and behind the guardrail or up the embankment. The driver’s seat is not the safe place, and neither is standing on the traffic side of the vehicle changing a wheel while cars pass at 70.
Safely off the road on a wide shoulder or in a rest area → dial 511 before you dial anyone you have to pay. More on that below.
On your own driveway, or at the curb outside your house → then this is not an emergency at all, and treating it as one is the expensive mistake. The car isn’t going anywhere. Nothing gets worse overnight. You get the shop’s ordinary daytime price instead of a call-out fee, and the whole thing costs about the same as dinner out.
Stranded: the free help most drivers don’t know exists
511 is the three-digit traveler information number the FCC designated nationwide in 2000. In many states it reaches a safety service patrol — trucks that work the highways looking for stranded drivers, funded publicly and free at the point of use.
The California Highway Patrol describes what its Freeway Service Patrol will do in plain terms: change a flat tire, jump-start a dead battery, refill a radiator and tape hoses, and offer a gallon of gas if you’ve run out. If it can’t get you going, it will tow you free of charge to an approved drop spot. You reach it from a mobile phone or a freeway call box by dialing 5-1-1. Ohio, Virginia and most other states run equivalents under names like Freeway Safety Patrol or Safety Service Patrol.
Two caveats worth knowing before you rely on it. Implementation of 511 was left entirely to state and local agencies — there is no federal mandate — so coverage and menus differ, and in some places 511 will get you traffic reports rather than a dispatcher. If it doesn’t connect you to help, the state police non-emergency line is the fallback. And these patrols work highways only. They will not come to a residential street or your driveway.
Check what you already have before you pay
Roadside cover reaches most drivers through the car insurance policy, a credit card benefit, the manufacturer’s programme on a newer car, or a motoring club — and tire changes are on every one of those covered-service lists. GEICO’s add-on starts at $14 per car per year and covers tire changes for flats and blowouts. Open the app before you search for a mobile tire service. This is the same free-first check that applies when the car won’t start, and it is skipped for the same reason: nobody thinks about it until the moment it would help.
One exclusion to know: roadside cover typically changes the wheel. It does not repair the tire. That part still happens at a shop.
What’s actually in your trunk
Open it and find out now, not on a shoulder in the rain. Cars ship with one of three things, and they behave completely differently.
A full-size or compact spare. The compact one — the narrow “space-saver” — has speed and distance limits printed on its own sidewall. Read them. They are much lower than people assume, and they exist because the tire is not built for sustained use. It gets you to a shop, not through a week.
Run-flats and no spare at all. These have reinforced sidewalls that support the car’s weight with no air, for a limited distance at a reduced speed. The figures are in the owner’s manual and on the door placard, and they are shorter than the reputation suggests. Exceed them and the tire is destroyed internally — USTMA notes manufacturers may set their own repair restrictions on run-flats, and Jerry lists “run-flats driven too far/long at zero pressure” among the conditions a shop will refuse to repair. Treat the number as a distance to the nearest tire shop, not a distance to where you were going.
An inflator kit — a can of sealant and a small compressor. Increasingly common, because it saves weight and trunk space. It seals a small, clean puncture in the tread well enough for a slow drive to a shop, and does nothing at all for a sidewall cut, a gash, or a hole larger than a nail. It also has a bill attached: the sealant has to be cleaned off the inside of the tire and off the TPMS sensor before any repair, which Jerry prices at $10 to $30. Use it to get off a shoulder. Don’t mistake it for a spare wheel.
Whichever you have, do not drive on the flat. A few hundred yards on a deflated tire chews up the sidewall from the inside, which converts an otherwise repairable puncture into a new tire, and can bend or gouge the wheel rim on top. If the car must move, move it at walking pace and only as far as safe.
Repairable or not: the rules the shop is following
When a tire shop says it won’t repair your tire, it is usually applying a published industry standard rather than upselling you. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association sets it out:
- Repairs are restricted to the tread area only.
- The puncture “cannot be greater than 1/4-inch (6mm) in diameter”.
- “DO NOT make repairs where the injury damage extends into the shoulder/belt edge area OR where the injury extends at an angle into the shoulder area.” That is the sidewall rule, and it has no exceptions — the sidewall flexes on every rotation and no patch survives it.
- “Repairs cannot overlap.”
- The tire must be removed from the rim so the inside can be inspected. A repair done from the outside, without dismounting, is not an inspection.
- “A plug alone is an unacceptable repair.” The correct repair is a stem filling the puncture plus a patch sealing the inner liner.
Jerry lists the same refusals from the shop side, and adds the rest of them: irregular tears rather than clean punctures, multiple punctures close together, run-flats driven too far at zero pressure, tread under roughly 3/32 to 4/32, and tires aged past six to eight years.
So the two most common conversations at the counter both have honest answers behind them. “It’s in the sidewall, I can’t fix it” is true and is not negotiable. “A plug will do” is the opposite problem — a shop offering an outside-only plug is doing the cheap version of a repair the industry says is unacceptable, and you should decline it.
What it costs
- Plug-and-patch repair: $20 to $45 per tire, covering dismounting, the internal patch and plug, and rebalancing. $40 to $75 in high-cost areas or on specialty tires.
- Valve stem or TPMS service kit: $5 to $15. Frequently needed at the same time and legitimately so.
- Sealant cleanup after an inflator kit: $10 to $30.
- Tire disposal: $3 to $8 if the old one is scrapped.
- Replacement tire when it can’t be saved: $90 to $250 or more, depending on size and brand.
- Mobile call-out, work done where the car stands: $30 to $75 on top.
- Tow, if there’s no spare and no kit: hook-up $35 to $150 plus $2.50 to $7 per mile, with a short local tow at $75 to $125 and a national average around $109.
Two things fall out of that list. First, a tow costs three to five times what the repair does, which is the argument for having a usable spare or a working inflator kit rather than discovering you have neither. Second, several national tire chains repair punctures free as a courtesy whether or not you bought the tire from them — one phone call before you pay anyone is worth making.

The things that turn one flat into four
- Check the spare’s pressure twice a year. A spare that has been sitting for six years is flat when you need it, which is the only time you’ll find out.
- Photograph the wheel-lock key’s location, and confirm the jack and wrench are actually in the car. Cars sold second-hand are missing one of the three surprisingly often.
- Save the puncture. If you find a screw or nail and the tire is holding pressure, leave it in and drive straight to a shop. Pulling it out turns a slow leak into a flat in the next mile.
- If a tire keeps going soft with no visible puncture, the leak is likely the valve stem or corrosion on the wheel’s bead seat, not the tread. Both are cheap. Neither fixes itself.
