The three-feature ID
Do this before you call anyone. Thirty seconds, and it decides which trade you dial, what the job costs, and whether this is a $250 annoyance or a structural problem.
Get one insect onto a white surface — paper, a countertop, the back of an envelope. Phone camera, tap to focus, get close. Then check three things, in this order.
Antennae — the most reliable feature
Termite: straight, running out from the head in a line, made of small round segments so it looks beaded, like a tiny string of pearls.
Ant: elbowed. There’s a distinct joint partway along, so the antenna leaves the head, runs out a short distance, then kinks off at an angle — a bent arm rather than a straight rod.
The University of Kentucky’s extension entomology service puts termites and ants side by side on exactly this: termites have “straight antennae,” ants have “elbowed antennae.” If your photo only resolves one feature clearly, make it this one.
Waist — the one you can see from across the room
Termite: no waist at all. Head, thorax, abdomen run together in one broad tube of roughly constant width. Kentucky’s phrasing is “a uniformly thickened waist,” which is a polite way of saying there isn’t one.
Ant: sharply pinched. A narrow, obvious nip between thorax and abdomen — the classic wasp silhouette that every ant, winged or not, has.
This is the feature you can call at arm’s length without a macro lens. Silhouette like a grain of rice: termite. Silhouette like a dumbbell with a thread in the middle: ant.
Wings — four equal, or two long and two short
Termite: four wings, all the same length, noticeably longer than the body so they overhang the abdomen and make the insect look front-heavy and clumsy in the air.
Ant: four wings, front pair distinctly longer than the rear pair. Kentucky again: ants have “forewings that are longer than the hind wings.”
Wings are also where the strongest evidence on this page lives, and it doesn’t need a live insect.
The shed wings on the windowsill
A small drift of identical translucent wings on a sill, a door track, or under a light fixture, with no bodies anywhere — that is close to a termite signature.
Here’s why. Kentucky describes the sequence: warm temperatures and rainfall trigger the winged termites to emerge and fly, then the swarmers “drop to the ground, shed their wings, pair off with a mate, and attempt to begin new colonies in the soil.” Shedding is a deliberate step in their life cycle, not damage. And because swarmers are drawn to light, they concentrate at windows and doors — which is precisely where you find the pile.
So: four equal wings, no bodies, at a window. Photograph them before you sweep, and put a few in an envelope. Mismatched wings — two long, two short — mean ants.
And if the swarm happened inside, that matters on its own. Kentucky is blunt about it — “discovering winged termites indoors almost always indicates an infestation warranting treatment.”
What to do in the next ten minutes
- Collect five to ten specimens. A zip bag, a pill bottle, a jar. Dry is fine; a splash of rubbing alcohol preserves them better. Do not put them in water.
- Photograph them on white, from the side, as close as your phone will focus. Side-on is what shows the waist.
- Do not spray. This is the expensive mistake. Aerosol scatters swarmers into other rooms and wall cavities, destroys the specimens the inspector needed, and coats the surfaces a technician would otherwise treat correctly. It also does nothing useful — Kentucky notes that termite swarmers emerging indoors “are incapable of damaging wood and only live for about a day,” and that a broom or vacuum handles them.
- Write down exactly where. Which room, which window, which side of the house, and — critically — whether they emerged next to the foundation, from a porch or patio slab, or from a stump out in the yard. That single detail changes the answer.
- Leave the mud alone. If you find a pencil-width earthen tube running up a foundation wall, a pier, or a sill plate, photograph it and don’t break it. That’s a termite highway, and it’s confirmation.
If they’re flying ants
Then this is a nuisance job, and a cheap one. Fixr prices ant extermination at $200 to $300 with a national average of $250, against a general one-time pest control visit at $158 to $288. Your existing pest company can handle it, and if you don’t have one, any general household pest operator can.
The exception worth knowing is carpenter ants. They’re ants by every feature above — elbowed antennae, pinched waist, mismatched wings — but they excavate galleries in wood to nest, and they favor wood that is already damp or rotting. Fixr puts carpenter ant treatment at $250 to $500. Finding them usually means finding the moisture that made the wood attractive, which is a separate repair. If you already have a springy patch of floor or a soft spot near a bathroom, what a soft floor actually means structurally is the more urgent read.
If they’re termites
The location of the swarm sets your urgency. Kentucky’s guidance: swarms coming out of stumps, woodpiles, and similar material in the yard “are not necessarily cause for concern, and do not automatically mean the house is infested.” Swarmers emerging next to the foundation or from an abutting porch or patio, on the other hand, mean “there’s a good chance the home is infested as well.”
What confirms it beyond the insects: pencil-diameter mud tubes on foundation walls, piers, sill plates, or floor joists. Wood hollowed out along the grain with dried soil lining the galleries — moisture and carpenter ant damage don’t have that lining. Small holes through drywall with soil at the edges. Rippled or sunken paint where they’ve tunneled underneath.
And the reassurance nobody selling you a treatment will offer: this is not an emergency measured in hours. Kentucky says it plainly — “termites damage wood slowly; the amount of damage caused by taking an additional day, week, or month to make an informed decision generally is inconsequential,” and warns you to “avoid firms that try to pressure you into signing a contract immediately with specials or scare tactics.” UC IPM’s advice is to obtain at least three structural inspection reports before deciding.
The license class most people don’t know exists
This is the part that routes the call, and it’s the reason a lot of people spend money on the wrong company.
Wood-destroying insect work is usually a separate license category from general household pest control. Florida’s statute lists the categories of certified operator license as “fumigation, general household pest control, lawn and ornamental pest control, and termites and other wood-destroying organisms pest control” — four boxes, and a company only holds the ones it’s certified for. Most states draw the line the same way, and many call the resulting document a WDI report (Wood Destroying Insect) or a WDO report (Wood Destroying Organisms).
The practical consequence: the technician who sprays your baseboards quarterly for roaches may work for a firm with nobody certified to inspect for or treat termites. They will often still send someone anyway. You get a general treatment against a structural pest, and a year later you pay twice.
The question to ask, verbatim: “Does your certified operator hold the wood-destroying organism category, and will I get a written WDI report?” A firm that does this work answers immediately and names the state license. A firm that doesn’t will pivot to their service plan. How to check a license and an insurance certificate before anyone starts covers verifying that answer rather than trusting it.
The related trap is the same one that traps people with rodents: being sold a recurring spray contract in place of the structural fix. The exclusion-versus-contract argument on the mice page transfers almost word for word — a quarterly visit manages a symptom while the actual problem, in that case an open building envelope and in this case a colony in the soil, goes untouched.
What it costs
Fixr puts a standalone termite inspection at $150 to $350 for a one-time visit, frequently rolled into the treatment price if you proceed. Treatment itself runs $450 to $2,000 with a national average of $680, spanning $300 to $7,050 across the full range of methods and severities. By infestation size, Fixr breaks it down as $300 to $1,200 small, $450 to $1,500 medium, $1,200 to $4,500 large, and $1,200 to $6,500 severe.
Method changes the pricing unit, which is what makes bids hard to compare. Liquid termiticide barriers are quoted per linear foot of foundation at $4 to $14.50 and baiting at $8 to $12. Fumigation or tenting, used for drywood termites, is quoted per square foot of house at $1 to $4. Ask every company for the unit and the measurement — two quotes that look wildly apart often differ only in how much of the perimeter each one plans to treat.
Then there’s the ongoing piece. Fixr lists an annual warranty renewal at $100 to $175, which has to be accompanied by a preventative treatment. Kentucky’s take is that it’s “a bit of a gamble to purchase any termite treatment without an ongoing service agreement,” because retreatment coverage generally depends on the renewal being maintained. That is one of the few recurring pest charges worth paying.
Repair is separate from treatment and comes after it. Fixr’s damage figures: $200 to $550 for drywall, $500 to $2,000 for framing, and $5,000 to $10,000 for foundation work.
The quote sanity-check
Structural pest quotes produce the most extreme real numbers in home services, and they’re sold at the worst possible moment — with an inspector standing in your crawl space describing what he just found.
Against Fixr’s national numbers — inspection $150 to $350, typical treatment $450 to $2,000, severe infestation topping out around $6,500 — a five-figure number for a residential termite job needs every component itemized before you sign. Common ways a quote inflates: bundling structural repair into the treatment price, quoting fumigation on a subterranean problem that liquid or bait would handle, loading a multi-year plan onto the front of the contract, and pricing the whole perimeter when part of it needs treating.
Get the treatment priced separately from the repair. Get the linear or square footage in writing. Get three inspections, as UC IPM recommends, and understand that the second and third also serve to confirm the first inspector actually found something. If you rent
Report it in writing today, with the photos and the location, and keep your copy. The timestamp makes everything afterward enforceable.
The structural point matters more here than in most pest cases: a termite inspection means someone drilling foundation walls, probing sill plates, injecting soil, and possibly installing bait stations in the ground. No tenant has standing to authorize that work or any business paying for it. Bag a few swarmers as evidence and hand the evidence over.
What to push back on is a maintenance response of “we’ll have the guy spray.” Spraying a termite swarm is not a treatment, and it destroys the evidence. Ask specifically whether the company being sent is licensed for wood-destroying organisms, and ask for a copy of the inspection report. If it stalls there, the escalation ladder for a landlord who won’t act covers the order of steps and when the local housing authority becomes the right call.
Reducing the odds of the next swarm
None of this substitutes for treatment, but all of it removes the conditions termites need.
- Break wood-to-soil contact. Deck posts, fence pickets, stair stringers, and siding touching dirt are a route past every barrier.
- Move the woodpile, the mulch pile, and the leftover lumber away from the foundation and off the crawl space floor.
- Grind or remove stumps near the house. A stump is a colony waiting to expand toward the next food source.
- Fix the moisture. Leaking hose bibbs, downspouts dumping at the foundation, a damp crawl space, an AC condensate line draining against the wall. Damp wood is the target for termites and carpenter ants both.
- Keep mulch shallow and back from the siding, and never covering weep holes or the sill.
- Look at your foundation twice a year for mud tubes — early spring before swarm season, and again in fall. Ten minutes with a flashlight is the cheapest inspection you will ever get.
