Do this before you read anything else
A burning, acrid, or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch plate, light fixture, or breaker panel while the power is still on is not a repair you schedule. It is a fire that has not started yet. By the time plastic is hot enough for you to smell it across a room, it is already hot enough to ignite the framing, insulation, and dust packed around it inside a wall you cannot see into.
In this order:
- Turn off the breaker for that circuit. Not the outlet, not the appliance — the breaker.
- If you cannot identify the circuit, turn off the main. Losing the whole house for a few hours is a cheap trade against a wall fire, and hunting for the right breaker while something is cooking is not a good use of the time.
- Stop using it. Do not unplug it and see what happens. That is the most common wrong move here: it puts your hand on the hottest, most likely-to-arc point in the circuit, and dropping the load makes the smell fade in a way that feels like the problem solved itself. It has not. Unplug only after the breaker is off, and only if you can reach the plug without touching anything discolored or hot.
- Do not reset the breaker to test it. If it tripped on its own, it did that for a reason.
Call 911 or the fire department if any of these are true: you can see smoke, sparking, scorching, browning, or melted plastic; the faceplate, the wall, or anything nearby is hot to the touch; you hear buzzing, crackling, or sizzling; the smell is still there after the breaker is off; or anyone in the house has a headache, nausea, or dizziness.
That last one about the smell after power-off matters more than it sounds. A smell that survives de-energizing means something is still smoldering rather than merely overheating, and smoldering inside a wall does not need electricity to keep going.
Never put water on an energized electrical fire. Water conducts, and you are standing in it. If there is a small, visible flame and you have a dry-chemical extinguisher rated for electrical fires, use it from a doorway you can back out of — and call 911 first, not after. If the fire is inside a wall or a panel, there is nothing for you to fight. Get everyone out.
Why the fire department and not an electrician
This is the part people get backwards, and it is understandable: the electrician is genuinely the right person to fix this, so calling one feels like the correct response. It is the correct second call.
Fire crews respond in minutes, at no charge, at 3 a.m. They carry thermal imaging that finds a hot spot inside a closed wall cavity, and they will pull a faceplate or cut an inspection hole to see what is behind it. An electrician carries better tools for the repair and arrives on Thursday.
The failure mode here is measured in minutes to hours; the repair is measured in days. Match the response time to the risk, not to the eventual invoice: 911 tonight, electrician tomorrow.
Is it the outlet, or the thing plugged into it?
Both are common, and the answer changes who you call second — but not what you do first. Kill the breaker either way, then look.
It is the outlet if: the faceplate or the receptacle is warm even after the load is disconnected, the plastic around the slots is browned, yellowed, or blistered, there are black smudges or soot marks radiating from the slots, plugs fall out or feel loose in it, or the same outlet has been noticeably warm before.
It is the device if: the heat is clearly in the cord, the plug body, or the appliance itself, the plug’s metal prongs are discolored or pitted while the receptacle’s slots are clean, the smell moves when you move the device to another room, or the item is a high-draw appliance — space heater, window AC, hair dryer, microwave — running through an extension cord or power strip. The US Fire Administration is explicit that major appliances go straight into a wall outlet and never onto an extension cord, because the cord overheats.
It is both, most of the time. A device drawing heavily through a worn receptacle heats the contacts; heated contacts lose spring tension; weaker contacts make worse connection and more heat. Once that loop has run a while, the receptacle is damaged even if the appliance was the origin, and it does not recover.
One more distinction worth making explicitly: this smell is not carbon monoxide. CO has no odor at all, and a burning-plastic smell tells you nothing about it either way. If people in the house have headaches or nausea that lift when they leave, that is a separate emergency with a separate response. If the smell is something you cannot pin down as electrical at all, work through the smell by its behavior first — but anything burning or hot-plastic near an outlet skips the triage and comes back here.
What actually causes it
Loose backstab connections. Most receptacles let an installer push the wire into a hole in the back instead of wrapping it around the side screw. It is fast, it is legal, and it is the single most common origin of exactly this fault. The spring clip holding that wire has a fraction of the contact area of a screw termination, it loosens with every thermal cycle, and a loose connection is a resistor that lives inside your wall.
An overloaded circuit. ESFI’s warning signs of an overloaded electrical system are worth memorizing: breakers tripping or fuses blowing frequently, lights dimming when other devices switch on, buzzing from switches or outlets, discolored outlets, and appliances that seem underpowered. ESFI also points out why this keeps getting worse — the average American home was built in 1977, and many existing homes simply cannot handle the demands of today’s devices.
A worn-out receptacle. These are mechanical parts with a service life. The contacts are spring metal, and after enough insertions they no longer grip. USFA’s guidance is one line and easy to act on: replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit snugly.
Aluminum branch wiring. Homes wired in roughly the mid-1960s to mid-1970s. The metal is fine; the terminations are the problem, because aluminum moves under a screw more than copper does and works itself loose over decades. It fails first at outlets and switches, and heat and smell are how it announces itself.
An arc fault. ESFI defines it as a dangerous electrical problem caused by damaged, overheated, or stressed wiring or devices — frayed or cracked older wire, a nail or screw driven through a cable behind a wall, or overburdened outlets and circuits. Arcing faults cause more than 30,000 home fires a year in the US, and ESFI notes the CPSC estimate that AFCI protection could prevent more than half of annual electrical fires.
Moisture, pests, or damage. Water into an exterior or bathroom box, a rodent through the insulation, or a picture hook through a cable all produce the same result.
For scale: USFA counted an estimated 24,200 residential building electrical fires in 2021, causing 295 deaths, 900 injuries, and over $1.2 billion in property loss. ESFI puts electrical malfunctions overall at around 35,000 home fires a year.
Warm is normal for a dimmer, never for an outlet
A dimmer switch converts a small amount of power to heat as part of how it works, so a warm dimmer plate can be within normal. So can a plug-in transformer, a laptop brick, or a phone charger.
A receptacle is different. It carries current through contacts; it consumes no power and has nothing to convert to heat. A warm outlet always means resistance somewhere it should not be, and there is no benign version of that. The same goes for a warm faceplate, a non-dimmer switch, and a warm breaker panel.
The visual tells run in a sequence, and catching them early is the whole game: plugs that no longer grip, then faint yellowing around the slots, then brown or black smudging, then a visible melt or a soot plume above the outlet. By the smudging stage it has been running hot for a long time.
Who to call, what it costs, and who not to call
Call a licensed electrician, same day. What they will actually do: confirm the circuit is dead, pull the device out of the box, and inspect the terminations and the conductors — because the receptacle is evidence, not usually the root cause. They will look for backstabs, loose or over-torqued screws, scorched conductor insulation, a shared neutral, aluminum wire, an over-fused circuit, and heat damage to the box. Then they re-terminate on screws, replace the device, and check the load. Expect them to open the panel too.
Fixr’s numbers give you the shape of the bill. Repairing a burned, sparking, or smoking outlet runs $150 to $400. Outlet repair generally sits at $75 to $200 with a national average of $140, a bad connection at $50 to $150, and replacing the wiring serving that outlet at $300 to $500. Aluminum-to-copper repair is priced per connection, at $300 to $500 per outlet. If the visit is billed as a call-out, Fixr puts an electrician’s service call at $176 to $327 per visit, at an hourly rate of $70 to $131.
Do not call a handyman for this. A handyman replacing a scorched receptacle is treating the symptom — a new device on the same loose termination, the same overloaded circuit, or the same aluminum conductor, with the evidence thrown in the trash. In much of the US, permanent branch-circuit work is licensed trade work anyway. Checking a license number against your state board takes about five minutes, and it is the cheapest step on this page.
Do not call the utility either, unless the heat, scorching, or smell is at the meter, the service mast, or the wires entering the house. Their responsibility ends at the meter; everything past it is yours. That boundary is the same one that decides who pays when the power goes out at your house alone, and it does not move for a burning smell.
If you rent
Call 911 yourself if any emergency sign is present. Do not wait for the landlord, and do not let a lease clause about contractor authorization delay a fire call — no lease outranks that.
Then notify the landlord in writing, the same day, with the time and exactly what you observed. Photograph the discoloration or scorching before anyone replaces the device — that evidence disappears in the first ten minutes of the repair, and it is what settles any later argument about how long the condition existed.
Wiring and receptacles are the landlord’s repair in every US state, and an active electrical fire risk is a habitability issue with a defined response window in most of them. Do not hire your own electrician and deduct it without following your state’s notice procedure — most leases and most statutes require written notice and an opportunity to repair first. If the notice is ignored, the escalation ladder with the deadlines and the retaliation protections is what to have open when you write the second message.
Keeping it from happening again
Once the circuit is repaired, three things reduce the odds of a repeat.
Ask for screw terminations, not backstabs, on every device the electrician touches. It costs nothing and it removes the most common origin of this failure.
Ask about AFCI protection for bedroom and living-area circuits. Arc fault breakers detect the arcing signature that ordinary breakers ignore. The National Electrical Code has required them broadly in new homes since the 2008 edition; retrofitting an older house is a breaker swap in the panel.
Fix the load, not just the outlet. Space heaters, window air conditioners, and other high-draw appliances belong in a wall outlet, never on an extension cord or a daisy-chained power strip. USFA’s list is short: do not overload outlets or power strips, insert plugs fully, replace worn or damaged cords immediately, and never run a major appliance on an extension cord.
And once a year, walk the house and put a hand on every faceplate. Warm ones are the fault at a stage where it is still a $150 repair.
